The installation Growth (2024) is a layered exploration of memory and impermanence. Through material experimentation that traces the memories of my grandmother’s garden, it reflects on how the past persists, collapses, transforms, or stagnates.
In the making process, a less regulated approach is taken to experiment with the combination of clay and metal mesh. The metal mesh is not used as a construction material but the matter itself. Drawing from Tim Ingold’s notion of making, it is to ‘rescue them from the cut-de-sac into which they had been cast and restore them to the currents of life’ (2013:19). The ambiguity in the fusion of materials departs the focus to its original agency to become an object. Through a feminist lens, the matter gains autonomy, moving beyond objectification and constructing its own narrative. This convergence of elements conveys subtle movement, transformation, and decay, expanding the possibilities for the work’s unfold narrative.
